Mohács (Croatian and Sokac: Mohač, German: Mohatsch, Serbian: Мохач, Turkish: Mohaç) is a town in Baranya county, Hungary on the right bank of the Danube. There are living a southern slavic folk group, the Roman catholic "Šokci". Ensemble Zengő - Hungarian folk music
Hungarian Folk Music
Performed by Ensemble Zengő - Pécs, Hungary
Performed by Ensemble Zengő - Pécs, Hungary
About Ensemble "Zengö": Our group was forged together from a common love of each other and of folk music. We seek relevant contemporary forms for the treasures of traditional music. The interpolation of the dynamic, tight-knit rhythms and the dense sound of this musical world into contemporary sound proves an exciting challenge. The appearance of the dance inserts in the musical pieces bears witness to the high level of this culture and its timeliness for the modern stage. The group, which was founded in 1983, has appeared many times on radio and TV, produced records. Besides collecting, teaching and arranging folk-music, the group have performed in concert halls and festivals at home and abroad. Read more...

When most people think of holidays in Greece they think
of the Greek islands. The idea of all these islands, each
different from the next, the whitewashed houses and
beautiful beaches is an enticement to anyone. But lost in
the commotion over Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes and
Corfu is the fact that some of the most beautiful and
interesting areas in Greece are not on the islands, but on
the mainland in places like the Peloponessos. (or

Simon Karas is probably the most controversial figure in
Byzantine Music history of the 20th century. A number of
his students and supporters place him amongst the
greatest contributors to Byzantine Music ever. His
opponents usually condemn most or all of his work and
consider his musical views "heretic" and alienating from
the traditional performance style ("ektelesis") of Psaltiki.
Others (including the Authors) find positive and negative
sides to his work. In this page, we present information
regarding Karas' life and work. More about Simon Karas...

Vesela je Šokadija!
Narodne pjesme, kola i poskočice - Folk songs and dances from "Šokadija" (Archive recordings, rare item)
Who are the "Šokci" ?
Šokci (Croatian: Šokci, Hungarian: Sokácok) are an ethnographic group of South Slavs who mainly identify as Croats. They are not considered a separate ethnicity in Croatia and elsewhere, while in Serbia they are. They have a distinct culture and tradition, differentiating them from other Croats. They live in various settlements along the Danube and Sava rivers in the historic regions of Slavonia, Baranya, Srijem and western Bačka. These regions today span eastern Croatia, northern Serbia (the Vojvodina province), and southern Hungary.
Šokci are considered to be a native population of Slavonia and Srijem in Croatia
